Mushers & Racing

We went to the mushers camp after our ride. A musher explained to us the races they take part in. The big race is the Ilkitrod (sp) race. It is a 1000 mile race during winter. Organised and run entirely by volunteers in February. This year there were 52 mushers took part. They run their dogs about 100 miles each day. They are allowed 14 dogs and cannot replace any that fall by the wayside. If a dog is injured or exhausted it can be withdrawn and transported to Vancouver where the race starts. At night the musher sleeps in a sleeping bag on the snow with the dogs to keep them warm. They call this fun!,
